"The people succumbed to the wiles of ambitious and scheming leaders who oppressed them with burdensome taxes, who lulled them with hollow promises, who countenanced and even encouraged loose and lascivious living. These evil schemers led the people into terrible wars that resulted in the death of millions."

This quote was about the Nephites and Lamanites given by Gordon B. Hinckley in a talk in August of 2005 when he extended the invitation for all the read the Book of Mormon by the end of the year. It's interesting how much this quote sounds like what's going on it our day. Remember, King Noah taxed 20%. We're over 50% in our day.
